If you have been following Windows 10 and it’s antivirus/anti malware product Windows Defender you already know it’s one of the better suites to add to your system. First it’s free and who hates free stuff? Second it’s creeping up on the antivirus review sites in terms of what it catches and it’s impact on the system. In a few months it will have parity with the major Anti Virus vendors. It’s a great antivirus for people who are budget minded and for gamer’s and such who do not like Antivirus bogging down their systems. What better maker of a fast Antivirus product than the builder of the Operating System? Apple has engaged in similar products although not really a full on Anti Virus product, but there is some protection.
One of the better features of Windows Defender is that it’s constantly learning and updating itself. Many of the best firewall products out there like Cisco AMP or Palo Alto’s threat cloud are exactly what Windows Defender is doing. Using the power of the cloud to detect threats, analyze them, and update signatures so you’re receiving AV/Malware updates in record times. This constantly updating system helps eliminate threats before they can grow into huge problems for Windows users. Think of it as Herd Immunity for people who are vaccinated protecting those who can not get the vaccine.
On the Enterprise front Windows Defender is growing into a built in alternative to other products such as Intel Security. My guess is MicroSoft has gotten tired of fixing the problems of antivirus and rolled their own to save time and effort while making a better product for their customers.
