For years server toolbox has been on a VPS rented at another company. Everything works as intended the rare outage etc, but at work were making a pivot to AWS as well and I needed to gain quick experience. Phase I is me moving my personal websites into AWS light sail instances and I’m pretty happy with it. Right now my sites reside on a GlusterFS cluster and using AWS high availability MySQL services. Performance has been acceptable. For those curious I will be posting a detailed write up on how everything is working. It’s even load balanced! So I can take one host down and do maintenance if needed (Rarely this is ever needed).
It’s been two months and I’m pretty satisfied with the results. GlusterFS likely needs some more fine tuning, but my paying job demands a lot of my time and it’s one of my passions so it’s not nearly as much work as it’s the experiences I get doing the things I love with technology today. Getting paid for it is a huge+. Some wise man once said get a job doing what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. I’m sure that man never worked a 60 hour week, but it’s mostly true.
